Missing military sense?

[edit]

An additional noun sense needed.

Note that very few of the greatest generals in history had the rank of general. Saladin, Ghengis Khan, Hannibal. Suggest: Leader of an army of military ground forces. -Commons:User:Makthorpe

Missing noun sense?

[edit]

Chambers 1908 also has a noun sense for "a class embracing many species". If they mean something like "moving from the particular to the general", then I think that could better be interpreted as an adjective. Equinox 15:37, 1 September 2019 (UTC)Reply

Swedish pronunciation

[edit]

/jɛn(ɛ)ˈrɑːl/ is the transcription, but the provided recording sounds very much like /ɛn d͡ʒɛnɛˈrɑːl/. Or perhaps I should use square brackets. Are [j] and [d͡ʒ] in free variation for /j/? Or perhaps d͡ʒ is a new variant pronunciation that is coming in? Shouldn't the transcription match the provided recording, or two transcriptions be given? Incidentally, the fact that the article "en" is pronounced before the headword is common to a lot of the Swedish recordings. I would think that it would be more logical for the recording to just be the word itself, though the risk of confusion is probably low. ¨31.208.181.52 12:46, 9 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
