It looks like it came to English directly from German rather than thru yiddesh:
Gelt (1) - “money,” 1520s, from Ger., Du. gelt “gold, money” (see geld (n.)). In some later uses, from Yiddish.

Thieves' cant
[edit]I have place the thieves' cant term under Etymology 5, from Yiddish, because one of its derivatives, smear-gelt, appears to definitely be Yiddish in origin. Many sources, however, state that it is from German and so should be under Etymology 4. I have not found anything that really settles the matter. - AdamBMorgan (talk) 13:04, 29 March 2017 (UTC)
