Add topicNotes on Italiot-Greek
[edit]Right off the bat - this is most likely Greek-derived, not Italian-derived, because the 'pht' beginning is VERY Greek. It might have taken a stop through Italian first but definitely Greek in origin. I'll bet actual money. THAT SAID, the original meaning is probably not 'animal' after some searching, so 1. it's probably Byzantine Greek which I don't have easy access to (... does anybody?) and 2. I'm curious about the specific sense of this one (as opposed to, say, [[[damàli]]) since that'll probably be easier to find an etymology from.
Parameters: β = v, no breathing marks, τ = (sometimes) δ, u = υ or ου, c = κ, ng = γγ
