Fruitcake as Insanity

[edit]

I see that we draw a connection between fruitcake as insanity and the phrase "nutty as a fruitcake". I would like to get a bead on the types of "very nutty" fruitcakes we are taking about in this colloquialism. Most fruitcakes I have known did not necessarily have that many nuts in them, although I don't claim to be an expert.

Wikipedia: Fruitcake "Mail-order fruitcakes in America began in 1913. Some well-known American bakers of fruitcake include Collin Street Bakery in Corsicana, Texas, and The Claxton Bakery in Claxton, Georgia. Both Collin Street and Claxton are Southern companies with inexpensive access to large nut quantities, for which the expression "nutty as a fruitcake" was derived in 1935." [1]
