[edit]1. I would posit that first chair is countable. E.g. "a press conference was conducted with some of the orchestra's leading musicians, the three first chairs - violin, trumpet and flute - answered questions from ..." . 203.167.235.188 01:19, 26 February 2009 (UTC)
2. Not sure how to draft it as a definition, but first chair can be used in circumstances outside orchestras, e.g. chess teams. 203.167.235.188 01:19, 26 February 2009 (UTC)
