- This is a matter of spelling. "Fire" was formerly also written "fier", and the two words then became standardized in different ways. You have such cases in most languages, though not as frequent as in English, because at some point these inconsistencies were removed by reform, whereas English almost always puts tradition over consistency. (Being a non-native speaker, for a long time I thought "fiery" was pronounced [fɪəɹi], perhaps because I associated it with "fierce".) 2.207.102.112 15:47, 16 November 2024 (UTC)
