Horse/hoarse

[edit]

The old (1933) OED and Century distinguish HORSE and HOARSE but disagree on which class this word belongs to: Century considers it to have the HOARSE vowel (/ɛnˈkoː(ə).ɹi.əl/), which would reflect its pronunciation in Greek [from the 1st century onward], while the OED considers it to have the HORSE vowel (/ɛnˈkɔːɹiəl/). - -sche (discuss) 01:43, 5 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
