Usage in Mexico and Central America

I have seen emparedado used for a type of sandwich on a long bread roll or part of one in Costa Rica and Panama, but nowhere between Mexico and Nicaragua. At least in Costa Rica the word sandwich in one or more spelling variant also exists. The two words may not refer to the same thing.
