Something Missing, or Wrong Preposition

[edit]

As I write, the definition states the ecometabolomics "studies the ecological effects on the metabolites of an organism." This is ambiguous, and the ambiguity might be resolved in one of at least three ways:

* The ecological effects of what on an organism's metabolites? Should something be added to this sentence?
* Or should this sentence be "studies ecological effects on the metabolites of an organism," i.e. eliminating "the" changes the meaning to "studies effects of the surrounding ecology on an organism's metabolites?"
* Or should "on" be "of," i.e. "studies the ecological effects of the metabolites of an organism?"
