Alternate definition

Seems to me something like 'A parable warning against undue, or unreasonable reliance on potentially risky unrealized assets' would be a better definition. The current one seems circular. But maybe I'm being too technical for a statement about chickens?

You're not quite right. The Milchmädchen one has pretty much the same sense as the English phrase; it's just not very common. Yours is a good alternative, as it's quite common, but the sense is not exactly the same, just close. Kolmiel (talk)

Not the common first sense (i.e. don't rely on future benefits that haven't yet appeared) but sense 2: "You should not expect all of your hopes to be fulfilled." Equinox ◑ 12:15, 29 July 2017 (UTC)

Isn't that just a part-definition? The first one essentially says "You should not expect all of your hopes to be fulfilled and make plans based on that", the second just leaves out the planning part. W3ird N3rd (talk) 20:45, 8 August 2017 (UTC)
