Definition was changed
[edit]The original definition was "to hold off; to keep at bay". The current definition is "to bring (something) under control; to overcome, to subdue". These are not the same thing. (If you hold off a lion, you keep it at a distance, but it isn't controlled or tamed.) Equinox ◑ 19:25, 19 June 2021 (UTC)
- @Equinox: didn't really see any quotations that indicated the term meant "to hold off; to keep at bay", so I brought the definition more in line with the OED one and the quotations in the entry. If you can find quotations supporting the previous definition, please add them to the entry. — SGconlaw (talk) 20:09, 19 June 2021 (UTC)
- @Sgconlaw: It's fine if it's correct, of course! I took the original definition from some old source (W1913 probably). I just felt the need to indicate that the def had changed and the citations are probably ambiguous. It's an observation. Equinox ◑ 03:15, 20 June 2021 (UTC)
