Source for Gaelic etymology?
[edit]The current version claims a Gaelic origin for this word. But, the OED has it as a derivative of "dull" -- no mention of Gaelic there. Is there a source for the Gaelic claim...? — This unsigned comment was added by Wikiscient (talk • contribs) at 21:08, 29 April 2010 (UTC).
- Etymonline also lists the same etymology as you give above. --Lundgren8 (t · c) 21:51, 10 November 2011 (UTC)
- A somewhat old, large Merriam-Webster has it such:
- doldrum [prob. akin to OE dol foolish, silly — more at DULL]
- dull [ME dul, dulle; akin to OE dol foolish, OHG tol foolish, ON dul concealment, conceit, Goth dwals foolish, OIr dall blind, Gk tholeros muddy, troubled, and prob. to L fumus smoke — more at FUME]
- where:
- OE Old English
- OHG Old High German
- ON Old Norse
- Goth Gothic
- OIr Old Irish
- Gk Greek
- L Latin
- One of the synonyms of DULL is DOLTISH.
