Arabic is missing

[edit]

Deir (dair, dayr) means monastery and there are loads of toponyms starting with Deir. Would be vey useful. Arminden (talk) 15:59, 1 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Arminden: Arabic is not written in the Latin letters ABCD... Please check the entry in Arabic script. Equinox 15:59, 1 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you Equinox. This might be indeed Wiktionary policy, this I don't know, but to claim that Arabic is not written using the Latin alphabet is only partially correct: Arabic place names are, and there are hundreds of them containing the Arabic word for monastery. Depending on local Arabic dialects, the nationality of the Westerner transliterating or phonetically transcribing the name, on the period and so forth, we have deir, deyr, deïr, dair, dayr etc., that's true; but deir occurs very often. See https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glossary_of_Arabic_toponyms#deir.
Since lots of people who would like to find info on such toponyms on Wiktionary do read the Latin alphabet, but not the Arabic abjad, I find it very short-sighted to give up on offering redirects from such common transliterations, to the Arabic entry on Wiktionary. W/o such redirects, the Arabic entries ar simply useless to the vast majority of people. Or am I missing some hidden mechanism here? Cheers, Arminden (talk) 10:14, 23 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
