Etymology

Dark elves is a translation of Old Norse Dökkálfar, a term used to refer to a group of beings in Norse mythology. There doesn't seem to be a singular form of Dökkálfar (at least we don't have one). I presume this is why dark elf was labelled as a back-formation of dark elves. Astral (talk) 20:40, 26 July 2012 (UTC)

Not sure how that issue could be handled. I stumbled upon light elves while populating Category:en:Mythological creatures, and thought it odd the entry was listed under the plural form. I saw that DCDuring had already moved dark elves to dark elf, so I decided to follow what was done there with light elves. Astral (talk) 21:22, 26 July 2012 (UTC)

I think I would assume that anybody first coining dark elves would have seen it as a plural of dark elf (after all, they got that word elves from somewhere), and not complicate things unduly by giving the plural precedence. Equinox ◑ 00:16, 27 July 2012 (UTC)
