cut the mustard is the same as cut the chesse. let it out or release it.

Cutting the mustard

My understanding was that this referred to mowing a field with a scythe. Mustard (a common weed in the Eastern US) is the hardest thing to cut. If you weren't competent with the scythe, you couldn't cut the mustard. Kestenbaum 23:20, 3 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
