Etymology
[edit]@Wikitiki89, Angr: I can't think of what the Yiddish etymon here would be, although maybe I'm just being stupid... —Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 23:12, 14 April 2016 (UTC)
- Duden says Tschecherl comes from the cant word schächer "pubkeeper", from schachern "to haggle", from Hebrew śạḵạr "to trade, bargain". I guess that must be spelled שכר in Hebrew and שׂכר in Yiddish, which I see is a blue link with the gloss "reward". —Aɴɢʀ (talk) 08:26, 15 April 2016 (UTC)
- I fixed the Yiddish gloss. I'm not really clear on whether Yiddish belongs in the etymology, then. If Tschecherl is created, we could also lop off the rest of the etymology here and put it there. —Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 14:54, 15 April 2016 (UTC)
- The etymology of de:tschechern could also shed some light; there it's connected not to שׂכר but to שחר. —Aɴɢʀ (talk) 15:19, 15 April 2016 (UTC)
