abstract sense
[edit]The word "conscious" is often used in a more abstract or philosophical way than in the first two senses. I have added a suggestion for a third definition, but I think it is a generally difficult concept to define so I welcome further attempts at alternative definitions.Gregcaletta 07:28, 10 September 2009 (UTC)

derivation
[edit]surely it's obvious that 'conscious' started as an adjective meaning 'possessed of conscience'. OED has 'conscious' originating in 1590s and the derived noun 'consciousness' from 1630s, perhaps because the origin noun 'conscience' was by then obsolete in any non-moral sense.
