Deceptive cognate

[edit]

The English word communitarianism doesn't really correspond to the French word communautarisme and it is properly flagged as a deceptive cognate in the French Wiktionary entry for communautarisme. There doesn't seem to be a one-word equivalent for communautarisme in English. Although the term minority-group identification is not in general use, it crops up in scholarly writing, is readily understood by lay English-speakers, and is a more accurate translation. Minority-group allegiance would be another strong candidate.

Notes on Related Terms:

  • In the appropriate context, terms like ethnocentrism and sectarianism would serve, but French has its own context-specific terms for these.
  • In current English usage, the term identity politics is widely used to mean political exploitation of minority-group identification or allegiance.
  • In current English usage, minority groups are often referred to as "communities" (e.g., "the gay community" or "the Somali community").
