Diæretic spellings as primary

After I changed this to coordinator Raifʻhār Doremítzwr explained that “there was a discussion concerning this and related entries a long time ago, where it was decided that the diæretic spellings would be the primary ones”. This seems like a rather arbitrary decision. Wouldn’t it make more sense to have the most common form as the primary one, especially when the diæretic spelling is as unusual as coördinator? I’d be curious to know where this policy is made explicit. --BrettR 15:02, 9 January 2007 (UTC)

*Sigh* Unfortunately, a lot of the way Wiktionary works is not defined explicitly in policies; rather, things seem to progress by case law. There is no consensus to make diæretic forms primary – somewhat the reverse, if anything. The best solution for now is probably to include all information under both forms so that neither of them are soft redirects. Widsith 15:21, 9 January 2007 (UTC)

Agreed; the decision was made concerning coördinate and its related words only. This really needs to be hammered out in a general policy. I’ll write a proposal in the foreseeable future. Raifʻhār Doremítzwr 17:20, 9 January 2007 (UTC)
