Im pretty sure

that it's the hairs growing out of the arms of the animal, taken all together as a single organ. See here for a scientific definition, although perhaps not a very helpful one for those without prior knowledge ... it would be a lot easier to understand if they hadnt used the highly polysemous word complement. I couldn't find another source with a direct definition, but this definition is the only definition that explains all the uses in running text. In theory this word could also describe the "hairs" of crabs and other arthropods, but it seems not to be in widepsread use apart from mites. —Soap— 09:51, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
