Citations don't make sense with definition?
[edit]I can't find all the citations but some might be errors for "chuckle", I suspect. The definition simply doesn't make sense with them. Equinox ◑ 20:38, 31 October 2021 (UTC)
- However, a previous sense meaning "cackle" was removed without comment. That might have made sense with some of the citations too. Equinox ◑ 20:39, 31 October 2021 (UTC)
- Ah, I had dropped it because I couldn't find any citations which really seemed, to me at the time, like "cackle, laugh" as opposed to something like "chatter" or just "say". (Other dictionaries seem to consider "rattle" a main meaning but that doesn't seem to be unambiguously attested, either.) You're right that "chuckle" might explain some of the cites. Bah, the difficulty is that it's often hard to be sure what sense a given citation is using, where it could be either ~"say" (although that's a bit different from "chatter") or "chuckle" (but not so much "cackle" IMO). - -sche (discuss) 22:36, 31 October 2021 (UTC)
