Etymology of "canteen=water bottle"

[edit]

While I think it's true canteen as in snack bar comes from cantina, I doubt its other meaning, as in water bottle comes from the same place, as this use exists only in English as far as I know. Instead, I think it's possible it is an adaptation from the Spanish/Catalan word for canteen=water bottle, "Cantimplora". This word has no parallels in other languages, but the sound at the beginning of the word is just the same as "canteen", it even sounds almost as "canteen bottle". If it had just the same origin in cantina, wouldn't it be expected to appear in any other language? Nonetheless, that's not the case, there are no other languages in which cantina, cantine or anything similar means water bottle 85.87.99.95 13:10, 26 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
