I think you're right: the sense of “collide” can be conveyed by bump alone, and into is used to construe a fair number of collision-related verbs (not only verbs where the collision is already implicit — “collide into”, “crash into”, and so on — but also verbs of motion, where the into-phrase adds that sense — “run into”, “walk into”, and so on.)
