At least bogeyman is probably cognate, and bugaboo might be too, so I think the etymology is fairly likely, though as with so many words we are really just taking an educated guess. Its possible that when you wrote this four years ago, our etymology for bug was different, but as it stands now we specifically state that bogey is "probably" cognate to bug.
