@Rua, Mnemosientje, Morgengave, Lambiam There's a Middle Dutch attestation of bruitscat here (not included in the MNW or VMNW). According to the editor of the 19th-century critical edition (De Geer van Jutphaas) it is in the expanded text variant of the Saksenspiegel. The editor dated the Vorlage to the 14th century, while manuscripts of the Middle Dutch translation date to the second half of the 15th century. However this is apparently from the part of the Middle Dutch version that has completely different (Frisian and Overstichtse, according to the editor) source material. Is the attestation good enough to support descent from Middle Dutch? I'd say there are enough 16th-century results for obsolete spellings of bruidsschat.
