[edit]According to Funk & Wagnell 1947 dictionary, the 'I' in BRIAR (<BRIER <Middle English BRERE), is influenced by Old French bruyère (briar), which itself seems to be from a cognate of Old English BRĒR (briar). The Irish BRIAR (prickle) is probably borrowed from English. No earlier sensible connections are found.
