Attested or not
[edit]@Einstein2 I would defer to your judgement—I claim no expertise in anything beyond mere definitions—I just need you to check DELR, the most up-to-date Romanian etymological dictionary and the source I unwisely used without citing, and confirm. The borkancsó line is found after double slashes, which indicates it is considered improbable. Still, I do notice that the source they cite is much older than the paper you reference. ―Biolongvistul (talk) 19:47, 22 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Biolongvistul Thanks for linking the DELR entry. Unfortunately, I could not gain access to the work referenced next to the borkancsó etymology (L. Tamás, Etymologisch-historisches Wörterbuch der ungarischen Elemente im Rumänischen). Nonetheless, contrary to what the dictionary says, borkancsó (and borkanna) is easily attestable in Hungarian (although the current standard terms are boroskancsó and boroskanna). Benő 2008 (and Péntek–Benő 2020) cite borkán as an example of a term borrowed back into Hungarian from Romanian (borkanna > borcan > borkán). While I'm not saying that is the definite etymology of borcan, I think it is worth listing it as a possibility. Einstein2 (talk) 20:17, 22 June 2024 (UTC)
