@Equinox: Going by what other dictionaries say, I think our definition ("stubborn, obstinate") is lacking: "deliberately refusing to accept that you are not completely right about something, in a way that is not helpful to other people and annoys them" (Macmillan)" (if that's indeed what it means, it's a perfect translation of French de mauvaise foi), "stubbornly contrary or obstructive : CANTANKEROUS" (Merriam-Webster). Yeah, it's a more derogatory way of saying "stubborn", and suggests that perhaps the person refuses to change even when they know that they should. My Chambers CD-ROM says: "liking bloodshed, cruel; in a mood of, or inclined to show, aggressive obstinacy (informal)". I have never personally encountered the "bloodshed" sense and I wonder whether it's obsolete. Equinox ◑ 02:42, 1 May 2019 (UTC)
