Slang verb for something a cat does

[edit]

Apparently, in (Internet?) slang, "blepping" is when a cat sticks its tongue out in a certain way. This is actually gaping, which allows the cat to smell things more accurately. Equinox 21:58, 20 October 2015 (UTC)Reply

Blepping is normally when an animal, usually a cat, sticks out its tongue with mouth closed. This is distinct from the Flehman response, but associated with it. After examining a scent, a cat may be distracted and end the Flehmen response, but leave its tongue out. With reaction-reinforment, this sticking-out toungue behaviour can become primary, and exhibited independently of scent analysis via mouth-agape. 173.230.196.25 18:52, 17 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
It's also important to note that 'blep' need not specifically refer to cats. In meme usage, the term has been applied to a wide range of animals, with examples easily found (for example, on imgur), of the term used for the behavior in dogs, foxes, etc. Without reference to a specific source (use your imagination) one can also find the term applied to anthropomorphic art as well where the characters have just the tip of their tongue exposed, mouth open or closed. The meaning has been widely generalized and at least some definition should reflect this. 68.114.34.8 20:58, 29 November 2018 (UTC)Reply

"(Internet slang) The sound a dog makes." Also, please improve the definition: dogs make lots of sounds, such as barking, growling, yipping, panting, sighing, and skittering their little feet on the kitchen linoleum. Equinox 20:43, 5 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

Internet users hear blep sounds from all kinds of sources, a metal detector, a phone line, pvp matches. And here is another Internet definition: “Blep is an adorable phenomenon that involves the protrusion of a cat‘s tongue while its mouth stays closed, often due to forgetfulness or while asleep.” No dog sounds were spotted in this cursory investigation. As to how an audible blep sounds, a conjectural rendering is /bɫp̚/.  --Lambiam 14:58, 6 October 2018 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I also thought the word referred to any animal, but often a pet, sticking its tongue out. ←₰-→ Lingo Bingo Dingo (talk) 09:56, 18 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

RFV-resolved. The verb passes, the noun fails. Kiwima (talk) 17:23, 8 December 2019 (UTC)Reply
