@PUC "How was I to know" is the same construction really; I've added a usex, but now noticed the word "not" does not appear! So this might not be the best choice of entry title. Equinox ◑ 14:54, 3 May 2020 (UTC)

- Longman and Macmillan have an entry for be to do something (which I don't think is a good entry title): “be to do something” in Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English, Longman. and “be to do something” (US) / “be to do something” (UK) in Macmillan English Dictionary.. @PUC: Even "be" isn't required: "I was told that I wasn't to go out with permission." It's something fundamental about to.Er, okay, "wasn't" is "be". I dunno! Equinox ◑ 16:09, 3 May 2020 (UTC)
