When I was in Nhulunbuy, I was told that "balanda" was originally used by the Yolgnu, not to mean "white person", but to mean "non-Yolgnu and non-Macassan". Thus a Japanese pearler would be a balanda, as would a black African, or for that matter, an Indigenous Australian from Victoria.

I would be interested in more detailed etymology that might elaborate this issue, if it is in fact valid.
