Etymology

I wouldn't specify "of germanic origins", Old French baboe, baboue ("mimic, ogre, small person, stupid person) is attested in Italian babau ("ogre"), Latin babaecalus ("stupid"), Spanish baba, baboso ("saliva, nonsens talking").
