The letter ä was not used in Old Swedish (æ was its predecessor), so it seems unlikely that this word was spelled like this, if it even existed in the first place. Glades12 (talk) 14:31, 26 January 2021 (UTC)

• SAOB mentions "fsv. bäria(s)"[1] in the etymology for bärja. I don't know SAOB's policy for altering or normalizing spelling of Old Swedish. If I search at Fornsvensk Lexikalisk Databas I can also find a spelling bäria. Again, I don't know if they change æ or ae to ä. Can you easily type æ on a Swedish keyboard?   The Swedish Academy doesn't seem to treat reconstructed and actually attested terms differently in its etymologies, so I take those with a grain of salt. (I'm not entirely sure how they approach spelling, though.) If bäria provably existed, then this entry should be moved to that title. As far as I know, æ hasn't been natively used since the 16th century in Swedish, so it's pretty hard (though not impossible) to type on Android and HP keyboards.   Here is a mention as æ, from Svensk etymologisk ordbok[2]: "bardalek sammansatt av fsv. bardaghi, isl. bardagi strid (av bari-, till stammén i fsv. bæria, isl. berja, slå; jfr baron)". There is a similar mention in Svenskt dialektlexikon[3]. Vox Sciurorum (talk) 20:29, 28 January 2021 (UTC)

I think the entry is intended to be Swedish, and not Old Swedish ? This makes sense given the etymology. I've updated the entry header to "Swedish". Please revert if this is incorrect. Leasnam (talk) 06:12, 29 January 2021 (UTC)
