avoid vs. evade

[edit]

In my experience, you "evade" something that is moving around and/or looking for you, like a predator or a police force. But "avoid" is broader. If true, add usage notes. 2A00:23C5:FE1C:3701:C8B4:F55B:4D71:31B0 16:31, 6 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Usage note: avoid, evade, or elude

[edit]

Avoid is neutral in tone, whereas evade implies dishonesty or deception, or at least some ulterior motive; also, avoid can be followed by a verbal noun in -ing, whereas evade must be followed by an ordinary noun.

Elude implies clever or ingenious avoidance. JMGN (talk) 20:28, 15 March 2025 (UTC)Reply
