The medical appendectomy sense is probably NOT slang

This could simply be an abbreviation dropping some letters. A Google Books search suggests this is the case, since the word is found in many formal medical papers. 2A00:23C5:FE1C:3701:E4C3:4992:FA7C:740B 16:08, 23 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
