Although I'm not a native speaker, I have serious doubts that "alongside" is etymologically related to the words "skin" and "deer"... -derf_red

Is the "of" in the example sentence necessary? Is it ever necessary? The example sentence being "Ahoy, bring your boat alongside of mine."
