German translation

[edit]

The german translation of "aircraft" is not "Flugzeug" but "Luftfahrzeug". A "Flugzeug" is an aeroplane/airplane: fixed wings, heavier than air, usually power-driven. See w:de:Flugzeug for some sources/references. --El Grafo 10:29, 14 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

Well, yes and no. When "aircraft" really means "any kind of aircraft", then you're right. But the English word is also used simply as a synonym for "airplane", which is never done with the rather uncommon German "Luftfahrzeug".

Usage notes/nonstandard plural

[edit]

The usage notes state that "The nonstandard plural form aircrafts is also in use among both non-native speakers of English and those who work in the aviation industry". This is however only because most people in the aviation industry do not have English as native language and simply don't know the correct plural form (without the ending "s"). That so many people use an incorrect form does not make it a nonstandard form. It's simply incorrect. Or? Tropowriter (talk) 15:38, 1 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
