One significant element of tracking the evolving usage situation of English langauge terminology related to Taiwan is understanding local usage, and an important subset of that is official usage at the local level. This has been recognized as a maddeningly confusing piece of the puzzle in understanding this part of English geographical vocabulary, because the Taiwanese presumptuously use whatever words they want to, as if they were free people deserving of respect with differing opinions on the issues. As we have been vouchsafed under the most holy doctrine of Hanyu Pinyin supremacism (of which I am the greatest among all believers: We must 罷黜百種音譯，獨尊漢語拼音), the academic elite of Anglo-American universities are the ultimate arbiters of Taiwanese geographical vocabulary, and the Taiwanese be damned. Absolutely nothing can be gained from a close examination of the situation except folly upon folly. However, as a true believer, I am still interested in understanding the depth of the depravity of the geographical mis-nomenclature of the Taiwanese that we might be better able to evangelize to them the true doctrines of the international standard for Mandarin romanization.
