Etymology

French wiki on the Chilean city has two ideas, and w:Valparaíso_de_Arriba has some more. I think it's save to explain this as valley of paradise. Although, val is rather short -- could it have a deeper meaning (value, valid; well (spring); *kʷel- or other *we- roots)?
