not a calque

[edit]

It is highly doubtful that Völkermord is in fact a calque of the Greek-English "genocide". The German term is in fact much older and can be found in texts at least a century older than those of Lemkin (1943) who coined "genocide". The Deutsche Textarchiv notes its use in 1841 [Herwegh, Georg: Gedichte eines Lebendigen. Bd. 1. Zürich u. a., 1841] and several others in the 19th c. The Grimm Wörterbuch likewise records first usage in 1850 in poems by Strachwitz, Moritz. Google books has a first record of its use in 1860 in Marx's Herr Vogt. Ironically the German wikipedia page on "Völkermord" also suggests a much older "Begriffsgeschichte" of the term than is possible with a calque. Jackewiebohne (talk) 14:24, 30 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
