I'm not familiar enough with html to correct this entry, but to whom it may concern (and to whomever can edit it): This is not a Latin-Greek-Latin phrase ("horrible bear bear"?); the second word, "arctos," is Latin for "northern." The phrase means "horrible northern bear."

That's not quite correct. The Latin (deprecated template usage) arctous means "northern". The word arctos in Latin was borrowed directly from Greek and refers to the "great bear (of the north)". It is a noun in Latin. --EncycloPetey 02:56, 5 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
