Etymology

While I have been working on the etymologies of geographical terms related to Chinese characters, I have always tried to remain open-minded about the romanization system any word originates with. That is to say, just because a word could have been created by a romanization system before it was created via a later-created romanization system, I always want to find examples to confirm that the earlier romanization system really did create a given word. I always seem to be able to find such examples, but I have expected that one day, I will get to truly minor geography that is somewhat rarely discussed, and it will be hard to make this determination.
In the case of this word, Shangluo, I think it's possible that a pre-Hanyu Pinyin system generated this word- see for instance the names of Chiang Ching-kuo and Kuomintang, where the -uo is used to represent the same final. Here, I preliminarily can't find any examples in Google Books or Internet Archive that show that this word has been generated before Hanyu Pinyin. But I think it will be to hasty to conclude that the etymology here should say that this word is from Hanyu Pinyin. In order to make that kind of pronouncement in this etymology section, I think an editor would need a comprehensive understanding of the words that came before 'Shangluo' that refer to this area- at this time, I haven't even made the Shang-lo or Shanglo pages yet. --Geographyinitiative (talk) 12:39, 6 June 2021 (UTC)
