Talk:Rightpondian

This page is using a cyclic definition, something I've seen more and more of with online dictionaries, including name brands like Merriam Webster. Usually this uses a base form of the word with a link to the page where that base word is defined. In this case, the definition uses the word being defined itself in the definition.

How insane is that??? Why give a definition if it is simply going to say the word is defined as itself? Is the definition of recursion, "see recursion"? Gnuarm (talk) 19:16, 25 January 2020 (UTC)

What's cyclic about it? Even the noun is "a Rightpondian person", where "Rightpondian" is an adjective, itself defined as "From or of Rightpondia". I can't find the cycle you're talking about. — surjection ⟨?⟩ 21:39, 25 January 2020 (UTC)

If you can't see that "Like a Rightpondian person." is using the word in the definition of the word, I don't know how to make it any more clear. The word being defined should not be used in the definition, not in ANY form. This applies to all three definitions here. Usually this rule is broken by using a base form, in this case "Rightpondia", to define related words, in this case "Rightpondian". But to define the noun by citing its use as an adjective and further defining the adjective by citing its use as an adjective simply sends the reader down the rabbit hole. What's wrong with simply giving a proper definition, "From or of the British Isles", "Like a person from the British Isles", "A person from the British Isles"? That would make the meaning clear without the double (or is it triple?) indirect referencing.

The issue is not whether it is a cycle in the true sense or a triple indirect self reference, but whether or not the definition is clear. It is not in the least way clear and requires looking up the term "Rightpondia" which should not be needed. If a reader knew the meaning of "Rightpondia", they surely would not need to look up the word "Rightpondian". --Gnuarm (talk) 13:13, 10 September 2020 (UTC)
