Broad

[edit]

It is claimed that the name "Platón" derives from "platús" meaning broad. Is this true?

It has been debunked by Notopoulos that Plato was a nickname and his supposed real name was Aristokles. See sources on Wikipedia article "Plato". Notopoulos rubbishes the later story that Plato was a nickname because of the breadth of his forehead, chest or learning. He points out that Plato was a perfectly normal Athenian name, and considers the resemblance between "Platon" and "platus"/"platos" a pun, a coincidence.

We would need a good-quality source to assert that Platon derives from platus. Given that Plato was a normal Athenian name, where did it come from? Did it have any meaning? What is its true etymology, if any? Cagliost (talk) 14:17, 22 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
