Etymology
[edit]Is this the etymology?
It derives, through the Greek Ὀνούφριος (Onouphrios) and the Latin Onuphrius, from an ancient Coptic name, Unnufer or Uenofer, in turn from an Egyptian epithet attributed to the god Osiris, wnn-nfr, or "he who is always happy". Sometimes, Onuphrius is also compared to the Germanic name Humphfried (which, in its Latin form, is Hunfridus)
The spread of the name is due to the veneration of St. Onuphrius, an anchorite who lived in Egypt in the fourth or fifth century; his cult, widespread in Constantinople, reached Europe with the Crusades; in Italy today it is mainly widespread in the South, especially in the provinces of Bari, Palermo, and Agrigento. 76.189.135.48 20:38, 24 December 2024 (UTC)
