Talk:Nigerian scam
Latest comment: 2 years ago by Lambiam in topic RFD discussion: January 2022
Should this really be taken to RFD per the IP's tag? I guess it could be SOP. General Vicinity (talk) 16:27, 10 January 2022 (UTC)
- I don't think it's SOP, unless you want to add a sense to Nigerian about advance fee scams, which may not be justified as it's only used in that sense in certain phrases. A Nigerian scam as defined here is not the same as a scam from Nigeria. Someone with no connection to the African country could execute such a ploy, and conversely there could be swindlers from Lagos whose activities do not fit the idiomatic definition here (but there should be &lit too, probably). Compare Philadelphia lawyer, Italian sandwich, and American cheese, all of which have meanings that derive from a toponym and a noun but refer to a specific sort of the noun (even if there is no connection to the place referenced). 70.172.194.25 16:47, 10 January 2022 (UTC)
