In Eastern Horizon Jan 1979, page 4, "Nei Monggol autonomous region" is listed as the "pinyin" name for the autonomous region, with "Inner Mongolia autonomous region" being called "traditional". I have always thought of 'Mongol' as being spelled with one 'g'. Outside of this name, I have never seen the double 'g' spelling 'Monggol'. To me, these facts indicate that there's something special connecting this double 'g' spelling with the 1979 pinyin switchovers. --Geographyinitiative (talk) 23:15, 7 September 2022 (UTC)
