Comparison With English

[edit]

Although German & English did both undergo a /uː/ > /aʊ̯/ sound change, neither seem to be at play in either Moskau or Moscow. There's no evidence (none presented here anyway), that the German word originally had /uː/ so an erratic /oʊ̯/ > /aʊ̯/ sound change is more likely, perhaps through another language. & the /aʊ̯/ pronunciation of English Moscow is a spelling-pronunciation which substitutes one <ow> diagraph for another. I'll be deleting the comparison but leaving this up incase someone is tempted to make it again or has other evidence. Anothracountiges (talk) 00:35, 13 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
