For sense "Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus", can it be verified if MERS is ever used without qualification to refer to the virus and not just the illness? The CDC says not.[1] -Mike (talk) 04:21, 31 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

It is a somewhat unfortunate and ignorant use and we should note in a usage note that this may be frowned upon, but it can be attested: “Mers is a virus that is transmitted from animals to humans”; “MERS is a coronavirus for which there is no cure”; “Because MERS is a virus, antibiotics are ineffective”.  --Lambiam 12:31, 1 February 2020 (UTC)Reply
