Regarding the MHG vowel and the potential Slavic borrowing, I want to add here that Late MHG krechse has the Upper German secondary-umlaut vowel [æ] (which becomes [a] in modern Bavarian). So the vowel poses no problem. Slavic open [ɔ] would've been borrowed as OHG [ɑ], resulting in a form such as *krahsnia, which then by secondary umlaut regularly becomes MHG *krähsen. Because of the adaptation of Slavic [ʃ] to [xs], we must assume an early borrowing anyway. So all in all it makes perfect sense.
